The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of catalyst waste on the engineering parameters of gypseous soil. To achieve this goal, standard geotechnical laboratory tests—namely unconfined compression, direct shear, and consolidation tests—were conducted and interpreted. After analyzing the results obtained from testing gypseous soil (containing 20% gypsum powder) treated with catalyst waste, it was observed that the use of catalyst waste is not particularly suitable in cases where improvement of shear behavior is desired. In fact, it may lead to a reduction of more than 60% in shear strength parameters and negatively affect failure characteristics. However, in scenarios where the confined behavior of soil (such as settlement issues) is of primary concern, the use of catalyst waste proved to be effective, resulting in a reduction of over 50% in the soil's volumetric compressibility coefficient. Therefore, it can be concluded that catalyst waste—at least in this specific context—cannot be regarded as a comprehensive solution for the improvement of gypseous soils, although its localized beneficial effects are undeniable.
